We are pleased to offer an important and early California Impressionist painting by this notable American painter. Arthur Webster Emerson began his art studies at Stanford University and later studied under John C. Johansen and Charles Hawthorne at Columbia University. A member of the Art Students League, Emerson exhibited with success throughout the United States including at the Society of Independent Artists (1917-1921, 1930) Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts, the American Watercolor Society (1918) and the Honolulu Academy of Fine Arts. He was the recipient of numerous prizes and awards and his work may be found in the permanent collections of museums nationwide. Painted when the artist was thirty years old, this lyrical view of San Francisco’s 1915 Golden Gate Exposition shows both Emerson’s eloquent brushwork and his relaxed mastery of Impressionist color theory. The painting happily retains its original and
finely carved, gilt-wood frame.
