TOBIAS AND THE ANGEL

Oil on Canvas

18 ¼ x 25 ¾  Inches

In a Period, Hand-Carved, Water-Gilded Frame

This charming Italian landscape is based on the painting of the same subject by Claude Gellee called ‘Lorrain’, formerly in the collection of the Empress Marie-Josephine of France and now in the Louvre. It dates to the same period as the original which was painted circa 1678 and, while compositionally similar, differs in numerous and telling details including the reverse left-right orientation of the painting, the simplification of the middle-ground and the absence of various details included in the larger work.  This luminous Old Master painting happily retains a fine and period, hand-carved and water-gilded frame.
