CHARLES FREDRICK LOWCOCK

(British, active 1878-1922)

A PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG LADY

20 x 16 Inches

Oil on Canvas

Signed 'C.F. Lowcock' and Dated '1882' Upper Left

In a Fine and Period, Hand-Carved Gilt-Wood Frame

This notable British genre, history and figural painter exhibited at London's Royal Academy from 1878 to 1904 and also at the Suffolk Street Gallery.  His exhibits at the Royal Academy were mostly classical architectural interiors or gardens and included titles such as In the Temple, The Lost Chord, and A Love Letter.  Charles Lowcock is listed in all relevant biographical dictionaries including Benezit and Wood’s Dictionary of Victorian Painters which also shows an illustration of his work.  We are pleased to offer this senistive and penetrating study of a young woman, dressed in Medieval Revival costume of the early 1880's and painted in the Pre-Raphaelite manner. The painting is exquisitely framed in a delicate period gilt-gesso frame of the period.
