In this charming painting from his mature period, Karl Behm perfectly captures the innocence of childhood in the infant’s expression of glee as his older sister weaves her spell. This delicate and perfectly balanced work also showcases Behm’s keen eye for detail and his facility with surface texture. A notable and well-listed genre painter, Karl Behm was born in Germany in 1858 and studied first under Herbst at the Berlin Art Academy before completing his studies in Munich. Behm exhibited his scenes of domestic life throughout Germany, winning a variety of medals and awards.
