Born in Rouen in 1880, Henri Buron studied first in Rouen and later in Paris where he was a student of Francois Cormon and Albert Lebourg. A member of the Société des Artistes Française, he exhibited at its Salons from 1924 and was awarded a gold medal there in 1935. Buron won a variety of other awards and medals including at the Universal Exposition of 1937 and was later appointed professor at his old school, the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Rouen. Henri Buron's work is held in the permanent collection of Honfleur Museum. This charming little painting, painted at the height of the artist's career, shows parishioners in their traditional Breton costumes leaving church after Sunday service.
