This notable German Expressionist painter studied first at the Art Academy in Stuttgart and later under Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky at the Bauhaus in Berlin. Fritz Faiss’ natural inclination towards the artistic expression of subjective perception was philosophically reinforced by his explorations of the principles of Chinese and East Asian art, which led to his complete rejection of naturalism and his exploration of painting as a vehicle for expanded perception. Though primarily a painter, Faiss was also a notable sculptor, wood-carver and printmaker and is also known for his scientific studies of the properties of color. Faiss’ work is held in museums throughout the United States and Germany. We are pleased to offer this vibrant and dynamic example from the artist’s middle period.
