Hendrik Grise was born in Michigan on June 5, 1914 and died in Monterey Park, California on February 7, 1983. He had professional training at Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago Professional Art School, and Dallas Museum of Fine Art. Grise taught life drawing and commercial art at Chaffey College in Rancho Cucamonga, California from 1949 to 1980. In the 1960s he created line drawing and mixed media nude figurals on paper. Throughout the 1970s, Grise focused his attention on exploring a variety of motifs and concepts, often celestial, sexual, and erotic, blending them in structured abstract designs in mixed media on paper. The Surrealistic sexual concepts of Hans Bellmer (1902-1975), strongly influenced Grise's work during this period. We are pleased to offer this dramatic figural study from Grise’s middle period.
