This noted French Animalier specialized in the painting of cats often shown in humorous domestic circumstances which enabled the artist to illuminate their playful and mischievous personalities. Jules LeRoy exhibited widely and with success at the Parisian Salons during the late nineteenth century. Gustave Leroy is well-listed in Benezit, Dictionnaire des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs, et Graveurs, the definitive dictionary of 19th century French artists, and his signature sample is also shown in European Artists: Signatures and Monograms 1800-1990. We are pleased to offer a charming example of Leroy's work in which he demonstrates his skill in capturing the nuanced emotions of
his feline subjects.
