This exceptional French Impressionist painter studied at the School of Fine Art in Angers, later working in the ateliers of Bonnat and Pissarro. Lebasque first exhibited in 1886 at the Salon des Indépendants, beginning a successful career during which he won many awards and medals. In addition to regularly exhibiting at the Salon des Artistes Française and the Salon des Indépendants, the artist was involved in the establishment of the Salon d'Automne in 1903, serving as a member of the committee until his death. Notable for his subtle and sensitive palette, Lebasque was also capable of a dramatic and intense Post-Impressionist style. In 1937, he received a retrospective at the Museum of the Petit Palais. Twenty years later, a further major retrospective was held at the Musée des Ponchettes in Nice. Lebasque’s paintings are held in the permanent collections of all major museums, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Petit Palais in Geneva and the Musée d’Art Moderne in Paris. This delicate work was painted circa 1905, during the artist’s residency in Lagny, and will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné being compiled by Denise Bazetoux.
