Born in San Francisco, California, Caroline Martin was educated in New York City at the Spence School and in Florence, Italy, where she began her art studies. After returning to California, she studied under Maurice Sterne at the California School of Fine Arts in 1935. Known for her brightly-colored depictions of domestic animals, cityscapes, and still-lives, Martin exhibited frequently at major museums in the San Francisco Bay Area and was the recipient of juried awards nationwide. For over sixty years in the collection of the San Francisco Museum of Art, this whimsical and enigmatic work was recently de-accessioned by the museum and represents an unusual opportunity to acquire a significant and decorated modernist painting with impeccable museum provenance. Caroline Martin’s Dogs Stranded in a City was the Purchase Prize winner at the 1947 San Francisco Museum of Arts 22nd San Francisco Women Artists Exhibition and was acquired by the museum at that time.
