A SUMMER’S DAY

Signed and Dated Lower Right ‘David Murray 1901’
David Murray was born in Scotland and became an associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1881. Following his move to London, Murray exhibited successfully for over fifty years, gaining particular recognition for his vigorous and elegantly-composed landscapes. He was made an associate of the Royal Academy in 1891 and a full member in 1905. He also exhibited at both the Old and New Watercolor Societies, the Grosvenor Gallery and the Royal Society of Artists. In the Country of Constable, Murray’s 1903 Royal Academy exhibit, was purchased for the nation by the Chantrey Bequest. We are pleased to offer an exceptional example of the artist’s middle period that shows Murray’s mastery of both atmospheric light and perspective and the elegant subtlety of his palette. This charming painting happily retains its original period gilt frame.
