ROBERT PANITZSCH

(Danish, 1879-1949)

WOMAN SEWING IN INTERIOR

Oil on Canvas

19.5 x 23.5 Inches

Signed Lower Left

Born in Mecklenburg, this talented German painter studied in Prague and at the Charlottenberg Art Institute in Berlin where he lived and exhibited for many years. Panitzsch was an admirer of Vermeer and, like that artist, he specialized in subtly lit interior scenes, often with women engaged in domestic pursuits or playing musical instruments. This lyrical example of the artist’s work shows his ability to invest these scenes of daily life with an almost mystical intensity. Panitzsch is well listed in art reference works including Castagno’s definitive European Artist’s Signatures and Monograms. His work is highly sought after at auction and is held in the permanent collections of the German national museum in Hanover and the Queen Alexandria museum in Berlin.
