AGNES PELTON

(American, 1881-1961)

CALIFORNIA LANDSCAPE

(Palm Springs)

Oil on Board

15 x 24 Inches

Signed Lower Right

This notable California artist graduated in 1900 from New York’s Pratt Institute where she studied with Arthur Dow.  For many years, Pelton lived and painted in Palm Springs where, inspired by the serenity of the desert, she painted landscapes and became an early pioneer of abstraction. Agnes Pelton was a member of the National Academy of Woman Painters and Sculptors and of The Transcendental Painting Group of Taos, NM. She exhibited widely and with success throughout the United States and her work may be found in the permanent collections of numerous prominent art museums, including Palm Springs, Santa Barbara, San Diego, Orange County and Oakland. We are pleased to offer this lyrical desert landscape that eloquently combines the artist’s gift for both representation and abstraction in a single, delicate work.
