Karl Herbstoffer first studied at the Vienna Academy with Franz Van Amerling. Moving to Paris in 1845, he became a French citizen. Exhibiting with success in both Vienna and Paris from 1843 to 1875, Herbsthoffer specialized in genre, historical and military subjects. The recipient of numerous awards and medals, Herbstoffer’s painting L’Armurier may be found in the Dieppe Museum and his Poste de Soldats dans les Montagnes is in the permanent collection of the Fine Art Museum in Nantes. This lively example of the artist’s work was recently de-accessioned from the permanent collection of Philadelphia’s Woodmere Art Museum.
