(French, 1903-1986)

CHEVAUX DANS L’ECURIE

(Horses in the Stable)

Gouache on Card

14 x 17 Inches

Signed Lower Left

Archivally Mounted in a Period Rubbed, Engraved and Embossed Gilt-wood Frame

Born in Tiflis, Georgia in 1903, Felix Varla studied and worked in Paris from the mid-1920’s. He specialized in figural scenes with subjects often derived from the folk-traditions of his native land. For many years, he exhibited with success at the annual Parisian salons and his work continues to be much sought-after at auction. Felix Varla is well-listed in all relevant reference works including in Benefit, the definitive French dictionary of artists, which also shows a sample of his signature. We are pleased to offer this austere yet energetic view of horses feeding that silluminates the artist’s subtlety of palette in an elegant and dynamic composition.
