KATHERINE BUZZELL BENEPE

(American, 1899-1988)

HOPI GIRL WITH KACHINA DOLL, 1936

Oil on Canvas

16 x 12 Inches

Signed Lower Right

Katherine Buzzell Benepe studied at UCLA and, later, with Nicolai Fechin and Elmer Schofield. Widely recognized for her studies of Native American life, she was a member of the Los Angeles Art Association, the Pasadena Art Association, the San Diego Art Guild and served as President of the Glendale Art Association.  She exhibited widely and with success and was the recipient of numerous prizes and juried awards including at the Pasadena Art Association (1936),the Woman Painters of the West Annual Exhibition (1954) and the Glendale Art Association (1953-5).

We are pleased to offer a sensitive and psychologically penetrating figural oil by this early California woman artist. Benepe has captured the essence of this young Hopi girl as she gently cradles her doll and gazes towards the viewer with both candor and charm.
