Born in Paris, Roger Derieux initially studied at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere and , subsequently, at the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs. Early in his career, he also received personal instruction from Francis Picabia. Derieux first exhibited at the Salon Moins de Trent Ans and the Salon d’Octobre and, later, at the Salon des Tuileries, the Ecole de Paris and the Salon d’Automne. He also exhibited with success internationally including at solo exhibitions in Paris, New York, Copenhagen, Tokyo, San Francisco, Oslo, Vienna and Prague among other cities. He was the recipient of numerous prizes, medal and juried awards including at Grenoble (1964), the Musee des Arts Decoratifs, Paris (1965) and the Prix Lissone, Milan (1955). He also worked as a book illustrator, particularly for poets such as Charles Baudelaire and Pierre-Jean Jouve, for whose poems he created softly-modeled, interpretative figural works.
Early in his career, Durieux experimented with Fauvism, Cubism and Abstraction and eventually developed a unique style that combined elements of all three with a soft pastel palette. In 1983, he ceased all figurative work and began to focus on abstraction to allow his technique to develop greater reflexivity. Whether in abstract or representational works, however, the intimate, visual poetry that Durieux always sought may be found in his spontaneity in form and delicate freedom in color. The works of Roger Durieux may be found in the permanent collections of numerous national museums including The Musee des Beaux Arts (Grenoble), the Musee d’Art et d’Histoire (Narbonne), the Centre d’Art Contemporaine, (Perpignan), and the Musee Carol-August, (Salzburg). The artist is well-listed in the definitive dictionary of French artists, Benezit, Dictionnaire des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs, et Graveurs. We are pleased to offer a delicate, colorist still-life by this notable French Modernist.
