CARL FISCHER

(Danish, 1887-1962)

SEATED FIGURE WITH PEARS

Watercolor on Paper

18½ x 14 Inches

Signed Lower Left

An intimate, post-Impressionist style scene showing a young woman seated beside a table with pears in a ceramic bowl. In this work, the sense of stillness that characterizes Fischer's work is broken by strong color accents in the draperies.

Carl Fischer first studied under Viggo Johansen (1907-12) and, subsequently, in the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Germany. He was the recipient of several scholarships, including the Akademie Scholarship (1917) which allowed him to further his studies for two years abroad. Fischer exhibited widely and with success and was the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards. Throughout his lifetime, he was a regular exhibitor at the Royal Danish Academy of Art's fall invitational exhibition at the Charlottenborg Gallery.
