Born in Michigan, Hendrik Grise first studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and later at the Dallas Museum of Fine Art.  He became a teacher and taught life drawing and commercial art at Chaffey College, California from 1949 to 1980.  In the 1960s he created line drawing and mixed media nude figurals on paper.  Beginning in the 1970's, Grise turned his attention to exploring a variety of motifs and concepts, often celestial and erotic, blending them in structured abstract designs in mixed media on paper.  The Surrealistic theories of Hans Bellmer (1902-1975), strongly influenced Grise's later work. We are pleased to offer an atmospheric and lyrical nude from this talented figural artist’s middle period.
