(German, 1902-1980)

THE HARBOR AT BERMEO, SPAIN, 1951

Oil on Canvas

19¾ x 25¾  Inches

Signed Lower Right "A. P. Henneberger"

August Philipp Henneberger first studied at the Technisches Akademie in Nuremberg, initially working as a porcelain painter and, later, as a fashion designer. By 1925, he was attending classes in Munich with Lovis Corinth, who was then serving as President of the Berlin Secession. From 1927-1934, Henneberger furthered his studies under Prof. Karl Caspar at the Munich Art Academy and, in 1932, was awarded the Academy Prize. From 1939-45, he served in Southern France where he was exposed to the French modernists, particularly to Matisse and the Fauves. After the war, which saw his studio and artworks destroyed in an air-raid, he returned to Munich where he worked as a portrait painter and became a founding member of the Donau Wald Gruppe. He continued to travel widely, both in France and the Mediterranean countries where he painted landscapes and worked as an illustrator for Munich’s Neue Zeitung. We are pleased to offer this lyrical harbor scene dating to Henneberger's mature period.
