Introduction to McNaught Fine Art
Born to an art-loving family with a strong academic tradition, I was fortunate to grow up in the presence of Old Master and Post-Impressionist paintings. After two years working with Heath Fine Art in London, I spent ten years studying music, both at the Grove School of Music in Los Angeles and at (West) Berlin's Hochschule. Returning to art-dealing in 1982, I continued my education at London's Christie's Fine Arts, graduating in 1986. I then served for three years as head of the Fine Arts department of a West Coast auction house before opening my own gallery in San Anselmo, California, in 1989.
Every work of art I represent is thoroughly researched before being offered for sale. Comprehensive artist biographies and bibliographies are compiled, together with all available information on provenance. If necessary, a detailed condition report is also prepared. If conservation is required, all methods employed are consistent with current archival practice. Where a frame is called for, it will be supplied from our large stock of vintage frames or custom-made by hand.
While I am proud of long-standing relationships with both private and institutional collectors, it is always refreshing to work with a new client. New or old, however, all these relationships are essentially collaborative. The discovery of fine art is both a journey and a destination. As I work with each collector, I seek those paintings that will not only enhance a collection but also enrich the experience of collecting. I am always happy to discuss a particular painting or area of interest. Should you have a question, please give me a call.
