Signed Lower Left "Helge Nielsen"
Dated Lower Left
Helge Nielsen first studied under Julius Paulsen at the Copenhagen Art Academy from 1914-16. Nielsen initially painted in Paulsen's moody and Impressionist, naturalist style but, after his first visit to Paris (1920) he was influenced by the Romantics, particularly the saturated and theatrical palette of Delacroix. Subsequently, he absorbed all the lessons of Modernism but used them sparingly and according to his own rigorous aesthetic principles which, finally, remained grounded in the principles of 19th-century Realism.
We are pleased to offer this large and vibrant work dating to the artist's middle period.
