Knut Norman first studied in Stockholm and, early on, evolved a characteristic and distinctive, Post-Impressionist style. He was a protégé of the ground-breaking Swedish artist, Anders Zorn, who became his patron and funded his further studies in Paris. Norman then moved to Venice where he specialized in vibrant scenes of the sun-drenched, back-water canals. He subsequently divided his time between his adopted homes in Paris and Venice before finally retiring in Sweden. Norman’s work is represented in numerous museums including the Museum of Trelleborg, the city in which he finally lived. We are pleased to offer this dramatically-composed and atmospheric nautical scene. Painted in Norman’s characteristically saturated palette against a muted, almost Tonalist, background, this work exemplifies Knut Norman’s mature style.
