CATTLE AND SHEEP RESTING IN A LANDSCAPE

Oil on Mahogany Panel

10¼ x 13¼ Inches

Signed and Inscribed Lower Left ‘M. Quispel f’

Retaining an exceptional and period, Ebony and Mahogany Dutch Whipple Frame

Born in Numansdorp in 1805, Quispel studied under Schomnan and Dorrecht and later with Gustavus Gregoor.  The artist is known for his sensitive and anatomically-exact studies of farm animals, often placed dramatically in the foreground of panoramic and light-suffused landscapes. Quispel’s paintings may be found in the permanent collections of prominent European museums including the Dordrecht Museum of Fine Arts, (Landscape with Cattle). We are pleased to offer this particularly fine rendering of cattle and sheep in a landscape with a shepherd and his flock visible in the extreme distance on the right. This charming painting compares favorably with Quispel’s finest work and shows the artist’s absolute mastery of mood and perspective.
