This California painter and printmaker grew up in Long Island, New York, and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania. He subsequently studied in Paris where he was particularly influenced by the works of Matisse and Raoul Dufy. On his return to the United States, Botz worked as a fabric designer for Brunschwig and Fils while continuing to paint part-time. An avid painter since childhood, Botz held his first one-man show at the age of forty-five at the Pantechnicon in San Francisco (1971) and saw thirty-two of his thirty-four exhibited works sold on the opening day. This, together with other successful exhibitions, encouraged him to take up painting professionally. He then moved to Los Angeles, becoming a member of the artist community in Laguna Beach and opening his own gallery, overlooking the ocean on the North Coast Highway.
