This early California Plein Air painter first studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and opened his first San Francisco studio in 1915 during the Panama Pacific International Exposition. During this period, he traveled widely in Northern California painting both coastal scenes of the San Francisco Bay area as well as many views of his beloved Sierra Mountains.
By 1928, he had settled in Southern California where he painted and exhibited widely and with success, including in Los Angeles, Palm Springs, and Santa Barbara. Frey was the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards and was also a long-time member of the Society of Painters & Sculptors of Los Angeles. Frey is well listed in relevant art reference works including 'Who Was Who in American Art'.
