Born in Los Angeles, Thekla Hathaway received her Master of Fine Arts from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1975. Prior to moving to San Francisco in the early 1980s, she worked at the Santa Barbara Natural History Museum, designing and installing the Marine Hall and, subsequently, taught at both Santa Barbara City College and the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. In 1986, Hathaway moved to Berkeley where she set up her own studio.

Over the course of a long career, Hathaway exhibited widely and with success including at the Natural Museum of History (Santa Barbara, 1976), the California College of Arts & Crafts (1985), the Museum of Art and History (Santa Cruz, 2007) in addition to numerous Los Angeles galleries. She was represented in San Francisco by the Tom Luttrell Gallery, Cheryl Haines, and Toomey-Tourell. In Oaxaca, Mexico, she was represented by Galeria Quetzalli where the owner, having difficulty getting her shipped paintings through customs in Mexico City, invited Thekla to come to Oaxaca to paint and provided her with a house with a rooftop studio.

Collaborations, first with a Boston painter, later with a cellist and a composer occupied Thekla's attention for the last years of the 20th century. Exhibitions of the resulting work at the Richmond Art Center, "Epistolary Paint: A Visual Correspondence", at CalArts in Valencia, "Sound and Surface; A Duet for Brush and Bow" and at the Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum, "Synaxis: A Collaboration in Sight and Sound" completed the series. We are pleased to offer this large and luminous Abstract oil, painted when the artist was thirty-four years old.

Thekla Hathaway wrote the following concerning her relationship with painting:

A LOVE STORY

I first met Paint in Ms. Huff's sixth grade class at Brentwood Elementary School. Both my mother and my grandmother had had what they called "dalliances" with Paint, and I could sense, even as a child, that my attraction was serious and perhaps even dangerous. But infatuation is beguiling, so we continued a flirtation through the 50's, and then in the 60's I realized that this looked a lot like love. In 1970, after I had completed a master's degree in Anglo-American Intellectual History, I finally conquered my fear and made a lasting and full-time commitment to paint.
