The descendant of a pioneer California family, Clifford Holmes first studied at the University of Redlands and, subsequently, at San Francisco State. He later traveled and studied in Europe. Holmes painted in a wide variety of media including oil, watercolor and pastel and his favored subjects included portraits, landscapes and still-lives. Over the course of a long career, he exhibited widely and with success including at the Society of Western Artists, the American Artist's Professional League, the De Young Museum, the Crocker Art Club (later the Crocker Museum) and the Oakland Museum of which he was a founder and long-time board member. The recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards, he also served as president of both the Santa Cruz Art League and the Hayward Art Association.
