ST. PETER CELEBRATING THE EUCHARIST

Oil on Canvas relined to canvas

38 x 20½ Inches

Retaining a fine and antique, carved gilt-wood frame

Framed Dimensions: 24½ H x 2½ D x 41 W Inches

A substantial, mid-seventeenth century oil showing St. Peter celebrating Communion with a group of early Christians. A placid river flows through a neoclassical landscape as the celebrants gather beside a column fragment which serves as the Apostle's altar. This old master painting shows both a strong compositional sense and attention to fine detail, particularly in the fall of the period draperies and the naturalistic anatomy of the figures. The work remains in very good condition with restoration confined to secondary areas and totaling less than 5% of the surface.
